Josie and the girls visited our cabin mural at Huntsville Hospital Women and Children. We had a lot of fun. The hospital was very kind and provided the girls some lemonade and cookies. Cassie Scott from the Chamber and Sharon Steelman from Bamma Jammer joined us.

We had some play time and a questions and answer session for the girls to learn more about our careers and businesses.

Josie Murakaru is a fabulous program director for 5th and 6th young ladies. She is also in my Connect 9 education group. Josie invited me to do a project with the girls, exposing them to a creative business, and then they would take a field trip to one of our murals.

What we came up with was a mural "puzzle". I put up blank poster boards, painted the design in black, then took the individual posterboards for the girls to paint. My only direction was not to paint over the black lines. They didn't know what the final mural would be and you can see the results below.

We were excited to receive the call from Huntsville Hospital Foundation (HHF) letting us know they were expanding Kid’s Kamp to an indoor play room. We painted a large exterior camp themed mural for HHF in Spring 2007 and started their interior cabin themed mural this month. As always, the Huntsville Hospital and HHF staff are a pleasure to work for and with.

We finally found the culprit, have been taking action and the results have been amazing! ARTISTS BRUSH UP ON BUSINESS SKILLS

Huntsville, AL- North Alabama artists are invited to brush up on their business skills at the "Art of Business" workshops in the Von Braun South Hall Banquet Rooms Sunday, March 15, 10:00am - 1:00 pm. Individual sessions will focus on Photographing Art, Computer Basics-Web Site Development and Photoshop, and Art Business Basics-Office Control, Marketing, Legal Issues and Selling.

Sessions will be taught by Alabama experts. Gina Hurst (Art Consultant) and Alissa Ramsay (Average to Art) will team up to present Business Basics. Their program will be broad-based and focused on practical approaches to business necessities that allow artists to maximize both studio time and public exposure.

Walter Schumacher (former President of the Huntsville Art League) will tackle Computer Basics. He will address the fundamental issues involved in obtaining a web presence and offer an initial exposure to Photoshop software.

Maria Spies, from Mobile, will present Photographing Artwork with an emphasis on using digital cameras and lighting available to most young professional and amateur artists. Maria has offered her practical approach to Photographing Artwork nationwide.

The panel will be moderated by Toni Sikes, founder and publisher of the Guild Sourcebooks for Architects and Designers and the Artful Home catalog and web site. The panel will feature Huntsville area experts; Frank Nola, architect and principal with SKT Architects; Beverly Farrington, Interior Designer and owner of Accents of the South and Anders Andelfang, owner of ARC Design/Build. Angelica Pozo, ceramic artist with over twenty public commissions to her credit and a presenter at the Alabama Clay Conference will complete the panel.

The Artistic Intersection Panel will feature visual presentations of projects completed by panel members in order to stimulate enthusiasm for incorporating artistic creativity in construction projects. It will follow with a practical discussion of how to best handle this type of creative team approach; from pricing, to project control.

The winter months are mating season for whales in Puerto Vallarta. They come into the bay and are a beautiful sight even from high above in the Penthouse of Casa En Las Nubes. Dan and Wendy Gangler Dan of Liquid Art Design in the Chicago area are not only seasoned faux finishers, but happen to be at the perfect spot to see one of the whales jumping out of the water! Venetian Plaster and Other Italian Plaster Techniques

Average To Art and owner Alissa (Murnane) Ramsay call Huntsville, Alabama home, but their Italian plaster techniques are internationally recognized. In 2008, Alissa won an international award for an original plaster finish, as well as, trained with the Masters in Italy. There are many products on the market in local box stores that are “Venetian Plaster” but are difficult to work with and produce inferior results. For a few extra dollars, decorative finishers and DIYers can invest in quality products with beautiful results that will LAST.

Some of our favorite green products below:

Oikos’ Ottocento (shimmer)
Oikos’ Kreos (more of a coarse texture great for Linen techniques)
“Lime Butter” ("easy" yet authentic Venetian Plaster)
Instead of the usual wax to seal a Venetian Plaster, use Bees Wax.

All of the products above give superior results, have a fresh smell and are VOC free. For Alissa, her body would swell after working with products heavy in “toxins”. Inside a modest white house on Meridian Street beneath the words, “Average to Art” Alissa Murnane runs her business (by that very name) which specializes in decorative finishes and wall murals for the home or business. She and the rest of her team have been recognized numerous times for their achievement, most notably (and most recently) placing first in an international contest for most viable decorative finish. She was chosen to go to Italy by the Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes-- one of seven in the country-- to train with the masters at Oikos, an Italian plaster company. After completion, she will add nine days of classes to her 180 hours of decorative finish training and also put on the list, ‘Oikos approved applicator’.
“My mission is to stay the most up-to-date and the most competitive,” she says. She is surely doing a good job of it. Huntsville is lucky to be able to boast someone so accomplished and so dedicated. “We are a local company committed to Huntsville. We want to offer the best custom art you can get.”
“Art’s in my blood and you can’t get around it,” she says. Her philosophy seems wiser than what you would guess for that of someone still in their twenties. Instead of choosing her path with art that for so many means sleeping on other people’s couches and rummaging in dumpsters for dinner, she started with the same goal but her steps were guided by a sense of practicality; her decisions were wise and tailored to success in the modern world.
Drawing insight from meditation and a For Dummies book on careers, she set up Average to Art in a bedroom in the first house she and her husband occupied when they moved to Huntsville in 2003.
Average to Art offers decorative finishes for the home and for furniture as well as custom murals. They offer beauty and sophistication (the finishes) as well as whimsy and fun (murals), allowing a range of creative expression. Murnane has successfully created a living for herself rooted in creativity, an inspiration to all young people worried their passion will never be able to support them.
Murnane recognizes how unique her situation is, to be able to work where you are most happy, that’s something that doesn’t exist for the average bear. She says, “I feel like I get to do what I love so I should be giving back.” Average to Art works with Junior Achievement of America, they’re doing a 5k Ribbon Run in October for breast cancer and she’s working on donating time and energy to painting murals for Homes for Our Troops, a foundation that builds homes for injured veterans.
Average to Art has certainly grown since operating out of a bedroom, a paced growth. They moved into the gallery/showroom at 905 Meridian just this May, a proper space for a thriving business. The gallery is open Saturdays from 10-4, by appointment, or whenever you see the van bearing the promise, “Average to Art” out front.

We are having a fantastic time here in Italy. Oikos has been a fabulous host and have treated us very well. Today was our first day in class and we started 8 sample boards, I believe. The Adriatic Sea is beautiful and all is well. Not sure when I will get back to the computer. Hopefully I'll be able to post some photos, I am taking many!

We will start traveling to Florence and other cities Thursday, can't wait!

Alissa Murnane opens studio on Meridian Street

Alissa Murnane's new studio is anything but run-of-the-mill. She has opened Average To Art Studio and Showroom at 905 Meridian St. N. in Huntsville.

Average To Art turns average walls into art with decorative and faux finishes and custom murals for commercial and residential clients in the Tennessee Valley.

In 2003, Murnane organized her business in a one-bedroom apartment, then two rooms in a three-bedroom house, which her work quickly outgrew. She moved to a larger property in Madison and has operated the business there for two years.

"Average To Art now has an exclusive studio and showroom open to the public in Huntsville," she said. The studio's central location allows easy access for Murnane's existing and potential clients. She enjoys the flowers and greenery across the street at Summer Classics and the murals she finds inspirational at nearby Garden Cove. "These remind us how blessed we are to live our dreams as artists."

Some "tender loving care" was needed to convert the 1926 house to a studio. The 1,200 square-foot building "has lots of charm. We chose to accentuate the character and simply freshen it by turning the average walls into art."

At the showroom's entrance, an art gallery features an artist each month. The showroom has wall finish samples and a murals gallery. Murnane now has an office, kitchen and working studio for preparing samples and sketches and conducting individual classes to homeowners.
The Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville-Madison County recognized Murnane as a finalist for 2006 Young Professional of the Year and 2007 Small Business of the Year. She was chosen as July 2007 Artisan of the Month by the Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes and received the Torch Award for marketplace ethics from the Better Business Bureau of Northern Alabama. Murnane earned certification four times as a professional decorative finisher.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Murnane grew up in numerous cities as a "marine brat." She received a bachelor's degree in international studies from Ohio State University and has more than 180 hours of decorative finish training. Her husband Austin Ramsay helps with the business and works as a bookkeeper for All Star Group.

Average To Art hosts networking meetings for business professionals on Fridays at 7:30 a.m. and monthly events, like "Lunch with an Interior Designer" and "Meet the Artist" parties. "We're excited to inform and show the people of Madison County how wall finishes and murals can create ambiance at home and work, both interior and exterior," she said.

Murnane invites people to stop in for a cup of coffee or espresso while touring the gallery. "Our beans come from Rwanda and help the surviving families of the genocide get back on their feet," she said. "Everything we do here at Average To Art is focused on bettering our community both locally and worldwide.

The fabulous artist, Don Howard, started painting the Willowbrook Murals a few weeks ago. The theme is to promote world cultures and the missionaries who serve there. Don and his crew have a couple weeks to go, but doesn’t it look amazing so far?!?!
